The Summer of Reconstruction
In the summer of 2025, a certain stillness preceded what would later be recognized as one of the most consequential periods of institutional reorganization in Arsenal’s modern history. At the surface, the public saw only transfer rumours and contract negotiations; but beneath this layer of familiar noise lay the deeper workings of a club embarking on its most wide-ranging project of reconstruction since the years that followed Arsène Wenger’s departure.

Inside the Emirates fortress, Arsenal’s senior figures convened to define the terms of their future campaign. Proceedings opened with an acknowledgment of Renée Slegers, whose arrival in the room was marked not by arrogance but by the quiet certainty of a decorated commander intent on securing the next title. Her tenure with Arsenal Women had already produced notable shifts in style and mentality, and her European successes imbued the women’s project with a renewed sense of purpose. Aaron D’Antino—energetic, detail-oriented, influential in the day-to-day rhythm of training—stood beside her, while Kelly Smith, who had shaped earlier generations of Arsenal women, lent an institutional continuity rarely seen in modern football. Chris Bradley’s specialization in set pieces would prove essential for long-term dominance.

Mikel Arteta, entering his fifth year at the club’s helm, presided over much of the process with a gravity that reflected the achievements and frustrations of the previous campaigns. He had delivered sustained competitiveness and re-established Arsenal within the elite spaces of European football, yet the Premier and Champions League titles remained agonisingly out of reach. To assist him were his technical lieutenants: Gabriel Heinze, a tactician of rigorous method whose relationship with Arteta stretched back to their shared years in Paris in 2001; Nicolas Jover, whose rethinking of set pieces had transformed dead balls into sources of routine advantage; Albert Stuivenberg, guardian of structural equilibrium; and Miguel Molina, whose strategic diagrams bore the meticulousness of military engineering.

The academy formed the third pillar of this strategic network. Per Mertesacker, Arsenal legend and world cup winner, overseeing the men’s youth system. He had spent several years cultivating a philosophy built on patience, character, and careful exposure to senior football. On the women’s side, Hannah Paterson—newly installed as academy manager—worked to establish a similar foundation. Both understood that no club could sustain itself on elite recruitment alone; success demanded a steady supply of homegrown talent.

Presiding above these interconnected departments was Andrea Berta, whose arrival from Atlético Madrid in 2025, succeeding the club legend Edu Gaspar, signalled a deliberate expansion of Arsenal’s international scouting and administrative reach. His mandate was explicit: to reshape Arsenal into an institution whose recruitment reflected the forward-looking statecraft of Europe’s most efficient clubs. His remit extended beyond acquisition: to foresee and secure the club’s future through strategic contract renewals. The anticipated appointment of Maurizio Micheli in November—formerly the architect behind Napoli’s defining signings—would complete this network.
