Emirates Stadium, London

For two seasons running, West Ham had found victory in north London. They arrived at the Emirates again, under a new manager and with old ambitions.

Mikel Arteta, marking his 300th match in charge, reshuffled after the midweek win over Olympiacos. Gabriel returned fit, Timber and Calafiori reclaimed the flanks, and Bukayo Saka — making his 200th Premier League appearance — led the line. Declan Rice faced his former club, while Eberechi Eze earned another chance from the start.

West Ham pressed early, looking to impose chaos. Within forty seconds, Fullkrug’s header, carried by a swirling wind, flashed over the bar. Arsenal replied through Timber, whose surging run drew the first save from Areola. On twelve minutes came the best chance yet: Saka’s cross found Gyökeres, who collided with the keeper, the rebound falling kindly for Eze six yards out. He blazed over. Trossard jogged over, hand on shoulder — keep your head.

Trouble struck twenty minutes in. Ødegaard, after clashing knees with Summerville, tried to continue but eventually limped off. A third injury in as many months. Zubimendi stepped forward.

Saka had a goal ruled narrowly offside before the breakthrough finally came. On 38 minutes, he found Zubimendi — a measured pass threading through the gap for Eze. One touch, one strike, low past Areola. Rice, waiting near the rebound, shot for goal — no celebration, just a fierce look toward the stands that once adored him. The disrespect of his departure still burns.

Before the interval, Timber’s strike rebounded off Areola into Calafiori’s path. His curling effort clipped the post and spun wide. West Ham survived, but the grip was slipping.

After the restart, Arsenal pressed harder. Rice drove through midfield, Saka twisted defenders, frustration grew in claret shirts. Fouls mounted — on Saka at 55, on Trossard at 59 — until Timber was bundled over in the box by Diouf. Penalty.

Saka took the ball, armband on, gaze fixed. Areola dived left; Saka lifted high to the right. 2–0. One hundred goal involvements in 200 Premier League matches — the same mark Thierry Henry reached in his 200th. The boy from Hale End made it look inevitable.

Moments later, Rice fell awkwardly and felt his back tighten. He went off to applause. Merino replaced him and almost scored from a corner with his first touch, but the contest was already decided. Arsenal moved top of the table with a clean sheet, their fourth straight win.

Arsenal 2 – 0 West Ham
