A Moment of Brilliance

Anfield Stadium, Liverpool
The duel at Anfield began before a ball was struck. Arsenal suffered another wound in the warm-up: William Saliba twisted his ankle. He tried to endure, insisting he could manage the pain, but the truth was revealed in his first movements: the anchor of Arsenal’s defence could not cope. Within minutes, he was gone. Cristhian Mosquera stepped into the breach —trial by fire. Yet the Colombian carried himself with uncommon composure.
On the wings, an operatic duel took shape: Noni Madueke against Milos Kerkez. Time and again Madueke’s direct aggression searched for the full-back’s limits; time and again the Hungarian answered with last-ditch precision. A blocked shot in the 22nd minute, a deflected cross in the 54th — attack and counterpoint, thrust and parry, a contest within the contest.
Konaté reigned supreme in the air, neutralising one of Arsenal’s most rehearsed weapons: set pieces. For nearly an hour, the match yielded no true strike on target. Florian Wirtz’s low shot unsettled Raya, who spilled, and Hugo Ekitike bundled home — only to be saved by an offside flag. The scare electrified the Kop, Liverpool surged, and Salah, quiet until then, began to cast his shadow. Arsenal held, Rice and Calafiori braced against the waves.
Arteta turned to his bench: half recovered captain Ødegaard entered, and with him, Eberechi Eze for his long-awaited debut. But substitutes cannot legislate for genius. With eight minutes left, Martín Zubimendi fouled Curtis Jones thirty yards from goal. Dominik Szoboszlai stepped forward. His free kick bent and soared, a Hungarian arc into the top corner beyond Raya’s despairing reach. The Kop erupted.
Arsenal pushed in vain. Gyökeres wrestled with Van Dijk, service scarce; Martinelli, shadowed and silenced, offered no release. Time expired, Liverpool triumphant, Arsenal empty-handed once more on Merseyside. Winless now in thirteen league visits to this ground.
Liverpool 1 – 0 Arsenal (D. Szoboszlai '83)
